Philadelphia Coal Piers, 2013-03-09, Rain Date n/a

Part of the old coal pier, no longer used. Coal was stored in the silo's on pier. Now an urban ruin

Jct. of E. Cumberland St. and N. Beach St., Philadelphia, PA

Have we got a field trip for you? You bet we do. It's the Philadelphia Coal Piers. - Read on.

The Philadelphia Coal Piers are a fantastic visual experience with lots of urban decay, rust, interesting angles, crumbling concrete, and TONS of graffiti. The piers sit right on the water and are a popular spot for artists, photographers, filmmakers, explorers, and fishermen. While there, occasionally glance up to the ceiling... lots of cool stuff like rusty valves, pipes, and cables. You can go to the middle or end of the pier for great views of the river, maybe a boat or two, and Ben Franklin bridge.

This was part of the old coal pier that is no longer used. Coal was stored in the silo's and then transported out to the pier via conveyor belt. It's a favored site for graffiti artists, fishermen and now photographers

Back in the days of the coal-powered transportation, ships had to refill their supplies, and that’s where the coal piers came into use. Now graffiti-covered relics, these behemoths are found on the Delaware river in Philadelphia.

See website links listed below for a collection of images which will give you an excellent idea of what you can expect to find.

Intend to photograph 3 special exhibits at the Museum of Natural History.

a. Butterfly Conservatory Exhibit
Dense humidity, lush green plants, and tropical butterflies of every color filling the room--who'd guess this is New York City in the middle of winter?

b. Creatures of Light Exhibit
Have you ever captured a glowing firefly? On a warm summer evening, a firefly’s light seems rare and magical. Yet the tree of life is spangled with organisms that blink, glow, flash, and glitter. Welcome to the world of bioluminescence—the generation of light by living things.

c. Spiders Alive Exhibit
Discover some of the planet's most versatile animals in a new exhibit that features live spiders, larger-than-life models, fossils, and more.

Anyone interested in attending should sign up then meet the group at the ticket counter inside the museum at 10:00 a.m on Thursday, Dec. 27h

The museum charges an entrance fee. The package that makes the most sense for us is Super Saver admission which costs $33.00. This incudes admission to the museum and all special exhibitions.

NOTE: Tripods aren't allowed but you can use flash.

East Village Walking Tour, 2012-09-09, Rain Date n/a

Escorted tour of the East Village

East Village - New York City

Malke and Jeff Altman of Timeline/LoVer East Side Tours will, once again, lead us on an exciting and informative tour. This time, it will be a tour of the East Village.

The East Village- The history of this area dates back to colonial times when it was owned by the Stuyvesant family. It later became the home to many immigrants, and it was considered the northern boundary of the Lower East Side. The East Village developed its own character and flavor in the 1960s when it began attracting young artists, musicians and hippies and grew to become the center of the counter-culture movement. Today the area is a charming combination of the old and the new, the trendy and the quaint, the past and the present.
Some stops along the way:

Stuyvesant St- One of the oldest streets in Manhattan with impressive 19th century row-houses and a feel of "Old New York"
St Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery- the 2nd oldest public building in NYC and its historic graveyard where members of the Stuyvesant family and other notables are buried
St Mark's Place- The longtime hub of the edgy East Village, this is one of the most hip streets in New York City, with varied boutiques and vendors.
The Community Synagogue- A distinctive, pre-Civil War structure which was originally built as a Lutheran church, infamous for losing most of its congregation in a tragic steamship fire in 1904.
Cooper Union College- founded in 1859 and providing all of its students with a full-tuition scholarship
The historic street of the "Yiddish Rialto" the home of Yiddish Theater in NYC
The Ottendorfer Library- the oldest existing free lending library in NYC.

and more...

The fee for this escorted tour is $20.00 per person.

Longwood Gardens Fireworks & Fountains Display plus Munroe Light, 2012-09-01, Rain Date n/a

Fireworks & Fountains and Munro Light Installation

Longood Gardens

Longwood's Firework and Fountains display will start at 9:15 p.m. and run for 1/2 hour.

Glittering fireworks and colorful fountains light up the night sky and dance to exciting music on select evenings in the midst of the Gardens' lush, natural beauty.

Since the gardens are open until 11:00 p.m., we can photograph the Munro Light Installation after the Fireworks and Fountains Display.

Since tickets need to be ordered in advance, we need people to sign up early. Instructions on buying tickets will follow.

My personal plan for this event is as follows:

a. I will leave N.Y./N.J early enough to get to Longwood by 8:45 a.m. on the 1st of September.
b. I will photograph in the conservatory from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon (use of tripods are permitted until noon).
c. I will then break for lunch
d. After lunch, I will check into the Hilton Garden Inn in Kennett Square which is very very close the Longwood's entrance.
e. After a nap, I will return to the Gardens for some afternoon photography in late afternoon light.
f. I will photograph the Fireworks and Fountains display from 9:15 p.m. until 9:45 p.m. then photograph the Munro Light installation until 11:00 p.m.
g. After a night's rest, I'll return to Longwood Gardens by 8:45 a.m. on the morning of the 2nd and photograph til noon.
h. I'll then drive home.

Obviously, you don't have to follow my game plan and can come up with your own. The key event is the Fireworks and Fountains Display at 9:15 p.m. and the Munro Light Installation.

Waterfalls at Childs Recreation Site, 2012-06-02, Rain Date n/a

Waterfall at Childs Recreation Site

Dingman's Ferry, PA

The George W. Childs Recreation Site is a former state park that is the site of a number of cascade waterfalls along Dingmans Creek. It is located in Dingmans Ferry in Delaware Township, Pike County, Pennsylvania and is part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area .

The site is named for the late newspaper publisher George William Childs, whose widow deeded the land to the commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1912. The site contains three main waterfalls: Factory Falls, Fulmer Falls and Deer Leap Falls and is a few miles upstream from Dingmans Falls and Silverthread Falls.

The pools below the waterfalls were once a popular spot for swimming during its ownership by the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks. However, that activity had been banned upon transfer of ownership to the National Park Service.
[edit]

The mill

The site is also host to the ruins of Joseph Brooks' 19th century woolen mill. About 1826 Joseph Brooks, a Welshman who had immigrated to Philadelphia, built a woolen mill of stone, 3½ stories high. He employed about 80 workers.

His sheep, though, were devoured by wolves or died from eating poisonous Sheep Laurel. Supplies, operatives, and materials such as expensive raw wool, had to be brought in from Philadelphia, and the finished products shipped down to this city by wagons, a trip which took 10 days. Brooks died in 1832 and the mill was abandoned, the ruins are still visible.

RCCs Field of Dreams - Sports Action Photography at its best. , 2012-05-26, Rain Date n/a

Photograph a baseball game from an exclusive field level vantage point with VIP access to players

Rockland Boulders Stadium - Pomona, New York

We have an action packed adventure planned for May 26th at the Rockland Boulders Baseball Stadium.

We have reserved exclusive use of their new and modern Dugout of Dreams. This is a field level dugout adjacent to the home team's dugout but it's larger and more luxurious. It's also designed to allow photographers to have the best possible vantage point to take pictures of the action from. We'll photograph from a position that's better than the first row of a field level box. No sports photographer ever had it so good.

If you'd like to see what to expect, go to following Flickr sight and see a few pictures that I took while visiting the stadium the other day. http://flickr.com/photos/31344902@N04/sets/72157629549091961
Our dream day will start at around 4:00 p.m. when we arrive and photograph batting and field practice. We'll also have the opportunity of meeting with and photographing individual ball players. The actual game will start at 7:00 p.m. so we'll be able to move around the ball park taking advantage of late afternoon golden light.

In addition to the ball game, there will be a fireworks display against the background of the Ramapo Mountains.

Our VIP package including the following:
a. Entry to the ball park with exclusive use of and seating in the Dugout of Dreams. (Parking is extra and costs $5.00 per car.
b. Unlimited Food and Beverage for 2-1/2 hours with dedicated waitress service. (Food service offers typical ballpark fare. That is hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and soft drinks. We may be able to have a few six packs of beer included.
c. There is a private bathroom facility in our Dugout.
d. Freedom to roam around the ball park during batting and field practice to take advantage of late afternoon golden light.
e. Fireworks

The price per person is $40.00 (doesn't include the $5.00 fee for parking).

We are limiting participation to 30 people. This is to make sure that we have adequate room to move around and photograph.

I anticipate that this field trip will fill up very quickly since many club members will want to bring their children and grand children.

When you sign up, please be sure and sign up anyone else that you're bringing as a non-member so I can get an accurate count.

Needless to say, let me know if you have any questions or need any additional information.

Secor Farm and Nursery - A day of floral photography, 2012-05-12, Rain Date n/a

A day of Floral Photography

85 Airmont Ave., Mahwah, New Jersey

Secor Farms is a very large nursery in Mahwah, New Jersey and maintains a large inventory of flowering plants. They also have 5 very large hot houses which house part of their inventory in addition to the inventory that they display outdoors. This means that our field trip can take place "rain or shine".

All participants should meet up with the group at Secor Farms at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, May, 12th, 2012.

Secor Farms is located at 85 Airmont Ave, in Mahwah, NJ. Their phone number is (201)529-2595

Since this site is a very local one, we won't be making any car pool arrangements and will leave that to the individual club members.

Grand Central Terminal, Photograph, 2012-05-06, Rain Date n/a

Photograph the interior of the classic Grand Central Terminal.

Grand Central Terminal, New York City

We will meet up at the Saddlebrook Marriott at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, May 6th, 2012 and car pool into New York City and the Grand Central Terminal. The plan is to arrive before 8:00 a.m. so that we can photograph the interior of the Terminal when there's a minimal amount of pedestrian traffic. We will photograph from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

The Terminal does allow photography of the interior of the building without restrictions, however, they do restrict the number of tripds that may be used to ten. Further, they do require a permit to use these tripods. I have applied for a permit and don't anticipate any problems in getting it.

Because of this restriction, the first 10 people to sign up will be permitted to bring and use their tripods. Anyone else that wishes to join us, may do so but can't bring or use their tripods. They can borrow and use the tripods of the first 10 ten if they can pry them from their hands.

Of course, it's quite possible to use hand held low light photography methods such as high ISO shooting if your're camera will allow the use of high ISO speeds without creating a problem with noise.

After shooting the interior of the Terminal, we can return home or continue to enjoy our visit to New York City. Weather will be the determinte. I will review this on Thursday, May 3rd and offer some suggestions.

Participants wishing to travel to New York City on their own can meet up with the group at a Municipal Parking Lot in the Lower East Side at 8:00 a.m. (Address of the Municipal Parking Lot will be supplied shortly.)

We'll all meet up with our local tour guide at 9:00 a.m. at the intersection of Canal Street, East Broadway and Essex Street. If you're using a GPS, put 167 East Broadway, New York into your GPS and you'll get there.

The group will arrive at the Lower East Side at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, Nov. 13th. We'll spend the next hour walking around and photographing on our own.

We'll meet up with our professional local tour guide at 9:00 a.m. for a 2 hour guided tour of the Lower East Side. Emphasis will be on photography.

We hope to arrange for a visit to a Greek Synagogue after our 2 hour tour and before our lunch break. The Greek Synagogue is located at 260 Broom Street between Allen and Eldridge Streets.

After our guided tour, we'll take another hour to walk around and photograph on our own.

We'll then take a lunch break and have lunch at the legendary Katz's Deli. (Cost of lunch is on your own.)

After lunch, we'll walk over to the South Street Seaport where we'll spend the rest of the afternoon.

If we have the strength and determination, we'll head over to Dumbo for some early evening photography.

In between all of this, I'd like to walk over to Spruce Street to take a look at and possibly photograph that wonderfully photogenic building that Boris Hardouin photographed and got an award for.

The cost of our professional tour guide is being taken care of by our club. Guests are welcome, as always, but guests who are not RCC members will be asked to pay $15.00 per person for the guided tour portion of this field trip.

Saugerties Horse event, 2011-07-30

Olympic style horse jumping event

Saugerties, New York

Saugerties, New York hosts the HITS-on-the-Hudson horse jumping event.

This beautiful and very accessible site allows us to photograph magnificent horses jumping formal gates.

In addition, the site offers all sorts of photo ops such as the stable areas, barns and workout rinks.
Riders are usually dressed in formal jumping attire.

There is supposed to be an entry fee but I've been there many times and no one has ever collected an entry fee.
Parking is also readily available and free.

Food can be purchased on the site.

Check out the site at the following link: http://www.hitsshows.com/saugerties/index.html

As this is a weather dependent event, I'll send out a go/no go email on Thursday, July 28th. If field trip is a go,
I'll also send meet up and car pooling information as well as some general details.

I'll also send out a preliminary field trip email Monday, the 25th of July.

We have had several club field trips to this site and everyone has always loved it and come away with some outstanding
images. You can check out the images taken by your fellow club members by going to http://www.ridgewoodcameraclub.org/field_trips_2010-11.html and scrolling down to Saugerties II July 31, 2010.

Photographers are free to walk around the entire site and photograph anyone and anything. Obviously, no flash photography as it could spook the horses.

Saugerties is a relatively easy 1-1/2 hour drive from our area.

Not only is this a great photo op site but it's a wonderful way to spend a day with your fellow club members.

As always, don't hesitate to email me at martinjoffe@gmail.com with any comments, questions and/or suggestions.

Weehauken July 4th, 2011-07-04

Fireworks and NY Skyline on the Fourth of July

Weehauken, NJ

Under any circumstances, Weehauken offers a wonderful view of the New York Skyline and night photography
from the vantage point of the Weehauken heights and often yields some terrific results.

This year, we're planning a field trip to Weehauken on the 4th of July to photograph the New York Skyline at
night with July 4th Fireworks filling the sky. Should be spectacular.

Volunteers will get to a predetermined vantage point early in the day and stake out the most favorable spot(s). We'll
set up chairs and tables but most importantly we'll secure the best possible spot to photograph from.

Club members who have signed up for this trip can then arrive late in the afternoon or early in the evening secure in
the knowledge that a spot is waiting for them.

We'll then photograph the New York Skyline with and without fireworks in view.

We'll also explore the possibility of having food and beverages available. I think they call it a picnic.

Plan on arriving early and discuss the techniques that you plan on using with your fellow photographers and club members.

This is a weather dependent event so I'll send out a preliminary email about the trip on Monday, June 27th and a final go/no go decision on Saturday, July 2nd. If the field trip is a go, I'll send out other relative field trip information at that time.

A special note of thanks to Bun Chan for his advice about this site.

Coney Island Mermaid Parade, 2011-06-18

Coney Island Art Parade-Everything & anything goes

Coney Island

The Coney Island Mermaid Parade is an opportunity to photograph creative New Yorkers at their best and
worst. Similar to the Greenwich Village Halloween festival, almost anything and everything goes.
Exhibitionists are on display with unique and sometimes bizarre costumes and creations. Not only will
you have the opportunity to photograph the participants but Coney Island itself offers many unique photo ops.
The rides, the people, the boardwalk and the beach all offer photo ops. Most, if not all, of the people you
encounter want to be photographed and are extremely cooperative and friendly.

You can also take a walk to adjacent Brighton Beach and photograph members of the Russian and Orthodox Jewish
community on and off the boardwalk.

You can check out the parade at the following link: http://www.coneyisland.com/mermaid.shtml

Of course a hot dog and french fries stop at Nathans is a must.

You don't want to take a car anywhere near this event so I'll organize car pools to Brooklyn where we'll park
in communities close to Coney Island but along the subway line and we'll take the subway to Coney Island. The
last subway stop is Coney Island and leaves you off right in the heart of the parade and Coney Island.

Brooklyn is about an hour and a half drive from Northern New Jersey.

The club took a previous trip to a Coney Island Mermaid Festival in June of 2010. If you'd like to see other
club members photos, please go to the following web link: http://www.ridgewoodcameraclub.org/field_trips_2009-10.html
and scroll down to the June 19, 2010 field trip images

This is a weather dependent event so I'll send out a preliminary email about the trip on Monday, June 13th and a
final go/no go decision on thursday, June 16th. if the field trip is a go, I'll also send out car pooling information
and other field trip related information.

Trip is subject to cancellation if less than 6 people sign up.

Stillman, New Jersey Rodeo, 2011-06-12, Rain Date None

Local rodeo with excellent photo ops

Stillman New Jersey

This is definitely a local bush league rodeo. However, it offers some excellent
photo ops. You can stand anywhere that you want to and on the same level as
the action. You can use a tripod and a mid range lens (70 - 200mm).

The club has had a field trip there before and many good images were taken.

If the weather is good and the sun is shining, we will get some great rodeo
action shots.

You will also be able to wander around and get some up close and personal shots
of the cowboys and their entourage as well as their accouterments.

Parking is relatively close by.

Wheaton Art Center, Cowtown Rodeo and N.J. Vintage Grand Prix, 2011-05-28, Rain Date none

An eclectic collection of photo ops - see "long description for further information"

Milleville and Pilesgrove, N.J.

This field trip is very interesting but somewhat difficult to explain so please bear with me while I try to explain the photo ops that you can expect to encounter. Please read this announcement carefully and thoroughly.

1. We'll leave northern New Jersey early Saturday morning, May 28th and drive down to Millville, New Jersey. We'll visit the Wheaton Arts Center which houses, the Wheaton Arts Glass Studio. The Wheaton Arts Center is a collection of studios that facilitate the ongoing work of artists and educate the public on the creative process.

The Glass Studio is a replica of the T.C. Wheaton Glass Factory. It's a vibrant interactive public access studio, home to resident staff artists. Visitors to the glass studio are afforded first-hand insights into artistic pursuits .

We will have the opportunity to photograph glass blowing artists as they go through the various stages of creating their works of art.

In addition, we'll have the opportunity of seeing and photographing other artists working in varied mediums sch as ceramics.

The Wheaton Art Center is a relatively large center and our visit will last for several hours.

You can check out this site at the following link: http://www.wheatonarts.org/artiststudios/glassstudio

2. After our visit to the Wheaton Art Center, we'll break for lunch then check into a local motel and rest for a few hours.

3. After our siesta, we'll head over to Pilesgrove, New Jersey to attend the Cowtown Rodeo. The Cowtown Rodeo is a professional rodeo that has been operating for 55 years. It's acclaimed for being a highlight in the professional rodeo circuit. The rodeo features all seven rodeo events.

You can check out the rodeo at the following link: http://www.cowtownrodeo.com

4. After a nights rest, we'll head over to Milleville, New Jersey to attend, experience and photograph at the New Jersey Vintage Grand Prix Festival and Milleville Air Show featuring the "Blue Angels". This will be a full day of excitement and photography.

You can check out this venue at the following links:
http://www.njvgp.com/?page=master
http://www.njvgp.com
http://www.njmotorsportspark.com
http://www.njmotorsportspark.com/tracks.html
http://millvilleairshow.com

Okay, that didn't seem all that complicated. We'll, here's where the complications come into play. I've decided to break the trip into several parts allowing you to choose and one of 5 options. Here they are:

1. Option 1: Participate just in the visit to the Wheaton Art Center.
2. Option 2: Participate just in the visit to the Cowtown Rodeo.
3. Option 3: Participate in the Wheaton Arts Center visit and Cowtown Rodeo.
4. Option 4: Participate only in the Milleville Air Show/Vintage Car Show.
5. Option 5: Participate in everything including the stay over Saturday night.

If this isn't complicated enough, we're not done.

When you go to the sign in page, you'll find some new options. That is, you'll have the choice of signing in to a particular option which will correspond to the options listed above.

Confused?? So am I.

Now for the fine print:

This is a weather dependent field trip so I'll send out a preliminary email about the trip on Monday, May 23rd and a final go/no go decision on Thursday, May 26th. If the field trip is a go, I'll also send car pooling information and other field trip related information.

There will be entrance fees involved.

Again, please feel free to email me at martinjoffe@gmail.com with any questions or comments.

Walden Motocross Track, 2011-05-21

Motocross Bike and Quad Race Track

Wallkill, New York

The Walden Motocross Track is a wonderfully photographer and photography friendly Motocross and Quad bike race track.

Saturday, the 21st of May will feature Motocross Bikes and Quads. There will be almost non stop action.

It's about an easy 1 hour (probably less) drive from our area.

Practice starts at 8:45 a.m. and racing starts at 10:00 a.m.

There are plenty of other photo ops as photographers can mix and mingle and get up real close with the bikes and bikers and their entourage.

It's very hard, if not impossible, to get great motocross images as long as you show up.

Check out the venue at the following link: http://waldenmx.com/

This is a weather dependent field trip so I'll send out a preliminary email about the trip on Monday May 16th and a final go/no decision on Thursday, May 19th. If field trip is a go, I'll also send car pooling information and other field trip related information.

I've been to this track many many times and the club as been there in the past. Outstanding action images were taken by most, if not all, of our participants.

If you'd like to see some of the images that you're fellow club members took on the last field trip, go to the following link: http://www.ridgewoodcameraclub.org/field_trips_2009-10.html and scroll down to "Walden Motocross October 25, 2009.

There is a $12.00 entry fee on race days (higher fee's are charged for Special Events.

Finally, field trip is subject to cancellation if less than 6 people sign up.

Please feel free to email me at martinjoffe@gmail.com with any questions or comments.

A Day Of Floral Photography, 2011-04-30

Photograph flowers and plants.

Secor Farms, Mahwah, New Jersey

If you've been a member of RCC for over a year you should be familiar with one of the traditions and rites of passage at the Ridgewood Camera Club. That is, a visit to Dieter's garden to photograph spring flowers. Unfortunately, Dieter passed away earlier this year, however, I felt that a Floral Photography Field trip by club members would be a fitting memorial to his memory and his love of flowers.

Secor Farms is a very large nursery in Mahwah, New Jersey and maintains a large inventory of flowering plants. They also have 5 very large hot houses which house part of their inventory in addition to the inventory that they display outdoors. This means that this field trip can take place "rain or shine".

Our own Tom Hicks is personally friendly with the owner of Secor Farms and paved the way for our visit.

As it turns out, the best time for RCC to visit Secor Farms is Saturday, April 30th, 2011. Unfortunately, I will be away in Texas photographing birds. Since neither spring or budding flowers will wait, I spoke with our own Vinnie Kempf and he graciously agreed to lead this field trip.

A Day of Floral Photography - Saturday, April 30, 2011

Anyone wishing to participate in this field trip should of course, sign up, so we know how many people to plan for.

They should meet up with the group at Secor Farms at 8:00 a.m. Secor Farms is located at 85 Airmont Ave. in Mahwah, NJ. Their phone number is (201)529-2595 and their web site is http://secorfarms.com

Since this site is very local, we won't be making any car pool arrangements and will leave that to individual club members.

Even though Vinnie will be leading the group, I will handle most of the advance planning until the 27th of April. So, please address all your questions to me. I'll keep Vinnie in the loop.

Best,

Marty

Quebec Winter Carnival, 2013-02-13, Rain Date n/a

Feb. 13th - Feb. 17th, 2013 trip to Quebec to photograph their Winter Carnival

Quebec

The Ridgewood Camera Club has traveled to Quebec for the past two years to attend and photograph their winter carnival. This field trip has always been very well attend and everyone has loved it. Last year we chartered a bus so we didn't have to drive ourselves.

I would like to schedule a return to Quebec from the 13th through the 17th of Quebec but need to know how many people would be interested.

We do need a minimum of 20 people or more to make this trip feasible.

Please let me know how you feel about this trip.

Marty
